Critically, as well as commercially, well received, 52nd Street featured some of Billy Joel's biggest hits, all of which charted in the Top 40 including My Life, Big Shot and Honesty. In addition, Billy Joel's 52nd Street was the first album to be commercially available in the Compact Disc format, being released in Japan in 1982. The album's name pays homage to 52nd Street, in New York City, which was the center of the jazz scene, during the middle of the 1900s, as well as being the home of CBS Records, which released 52nd Street. In addition, Billy Joel recorded the album in a studio, also located on 52nd Street.
